The Industries Department was set up during 1958 with Cottage Industries Officer as the Head of Office and having its headquarter at Sri. Vijaya Puram (Port Blair). The department underwent expansion and branch offices set up in out stations at Car Nicobar in 1962, at Rangat in 1975, at Diglipur in 1986, at Campbell Bay in 1996 and at Little Andaman in 1999. The department consequent to the expansion was upgraded and Director of Industries posted since 1978. The Director of Industries was declared Head of the Department since 1993. The vision of Industries Department is sustainable development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises as an engine of growth for the Islands Economy without disturbing the ecology of the Islands.
Presently the Industries Department has its Head quarter at Directorate of Industries, Middle Point, Sri Vijaya Puram, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The branches of Industries Department are located at:-
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India launched a Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Prime Minister Scheme for formalization of Micro food processing Enterprises” as a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan during 2020 with an aim to strengthen backward/ forward linkages, common infrastructure, packaging, branding & marketing of the products of micro enterprises. The scheme focuses on value addition of local perishable produce in identified agro-clusters, clusters of fisheries, dairy, poultry and other allied segments like minor forest produce. for a period of five year 2020-21 to 2024-25
Under the, micro food enterprises will be supported with a package of interventions for expansion, modernization and formalization of their units.
Initially, the Scheme was conceptualized on the theme of promoting One District -One products (ODOP) to give emphasis to product with ample resource potential and all States/UTs were asked to identify ODOP for all implementing Districts.
