The Cottage Industries Emporium, now renamed as Andaman & Nicobar Emporium- Sagarika, was set up 1960 with the need to market the handicrafts / products manufactured by the trainees in the Departmental training cum production centres. Some of the trainees after completion of their training ventured to manufacture the handicraft made out of shell, wood and other locally available raw materials but were unable to market their products. On the request of artisans, marketing assistance were provided through the then Cottage Industries Emporium. Initially only 2-4 such artisans took up the profession to earn their bread and butter with a meagre sales of total annual sales of Rs 8000/- Since no big industries were coming up due the various geographical constraints, handicrafts sector was the only sustainable source of income for the poor artisans. Slowly and gradually the trainees who received training from the Industries Department started taking up the profession of making handicrafts item and marketing through Andaman & Nicobar Emporium-SAGARIKA

The Sagarika Emporium has more than 2000 items for sale to tourists and general citizens of the Islands. The items as supplied by more than 81 suppliers across the entire A&N Islands. During peak tourist season, the Emporium does sales for more than 400 customer's daily and total no. of sales bills is around 40000 per year. The Billing and Accounting functions of the emporium have been computerized through specialized software developed by NIC, Port Blair. The software has been developed in open-source platform and successfully implemented from April 2008 onwards. The software is called e-BASIC (Electronically Billing Accounting System &Inventory Control)
